How a lung symptom is usually assessed

Assessment starts with the story: when the symptom began, what makes it better or worse, what work you do, what dust, birds or mould you have been around, whether you smoke cigarettes or a water pipe, and which medicines you take.

Then comes an examination and a blood oxygen check and, if needed, spirometry, a chest X-ray or a CT. Each result is read together with your symptoms and the examination, not apart from them.

Sometimes a bronchoscopy or a biopsy is needed to reach a diagnosis. After the diagnosis, a treatment and follow-up plan is set.
