Months after COVID, I am still breathless
Lasting breathlessness after COVID is common, but not every cause is COVID. When should it be checked?
Some people are still tired months after COVID, or get breathless on a single flight of stairs. Symptoms that last beyond 12 weeks are called long COVID. The CDC also describes it as a condition present for at least three months.
What are the symptoms?
Severe tiredness, breathlessness, joint and muscle pain and concentration problems are among the most common. Cough, dizziness, sleep problems and anxiety also occur. Symptoms may improve, return, or get worse with stress or too much activity.
Why not blame COVID for everything?
Breathlessness has many causes, from asthma and infection to heart disease and clots. So even if it began after COVID, it should be looked at. A doctor usually checks blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen and may ask for blood tests or other investigations.
What is the treatment?
According to the CDC, there is still no approved specific treatment for long COVID. The aim is a personal plan to improve symptoms and quality of life. Recovery varies between people, and some symptoms improve sooner than others.
When should you act sooner?
Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips or confusion do not wait for an appointment. See the list of warning signs.
